24HR Art has received funding from the Australia Council International Visitor Program, in partnership with Canberra Contemporary Art Space and Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, for two international curators to visit the Northern Territory as part of our public and professional development programs, they are Mr Agung Hujatnikajenong (Jenong) from Bandung, Indonesia and Ms Fu Xiaodong from Beijing, China. 24HR Art will facilitate a number of artist studio visits and artist presentations to inform the curators of current contemporary art practices of the Northern Territory. As part of the project, the curators will travel interstate to participate in the opening week celebration events of the 17th Biennale of Sydney The Beauty of Distance: Songs of Survival in a Precarious Age, and then onto a series of artist presentations in Melbourne, Perth and Canberra. As part of 24HR Art education programs, Agung and Xiaodong will complement their Darwin visits by presenting talks on the contemporary arts of their respective countries to the local arts community and general public.

24HR Art has received funding from the Australia Council Significant International Opportunities fund to undertake a major cultural exchange project as part of the Australian Government’s focus country program for 2010 – Australian Culture in China. The project, ‘A First Life Residency Project in Landscape’, is a residency project that will bring together contemporary visual artists from Australia and China to collectively experience the landscapes and cultures of northern Australia and regional China. As the title suggests, the project is designed to be an intensive ‘real life’ cultural and creative exchange. With the artists acting as cultural anthropologists, they will explore landscapes as being physical repositories of human attitudes, customs and beliefs. The artists will be asked to consider how people’s practices, beliefs and concepts have been informed and determined through living within particular landscapes. The Australian and Chinese artists will spend three weeks travelling by road across the Northern Territory visiting remote communities in Arnhem Land and the Kimberley region. They will then spend three weeks doing a road trip from Beijing to Lhasa, Tibet. The final stage will see the artists undergo an intensive studio session in Beijing for one month to produce new works for an exhibition opening in Beijing in November 2010. The 24HR Art Director Steve Eland has chosen the following artists to participate, Sam Leach, Tony Lloyd, Ben Armstrong, Cang Xin, Shi Jinsong and Wu Daxin.

The 2008 24HR Art members exhibition is named after a box, the Cube 625 (height 625mm length 625mm width 625mm). There is no set theme for this year’s show, simply that we want to challenge member’s to come up with innovative concepts on how to utilise the box. Paint it, animate it, sculpt it, slice it, destroy it, wear it, or jump on it. Works can be 2D, 3D or multi media works, no holes barred, however works cannot be any larger than a flattened Cube 625 box. To be part of the Cube 625 annual member’s exhibition please call into 24HR Art to collect your box.
Gallery opening hours to collect boxes: Wed - Fri 10am - 4pm, Saturday 10am - 2pm. The Member's Show will open on 24 October. Completed Works will need to be in by 13 October.

The forum will have a key focus on developing the participants’ knowledge of how to conceptualise and express a project: specificity of description, handling ideas and structuring proposals; and understanding funding (Interarts) definitions.
Following the forum, participants will be invited to join the mentorship stage, designed to give participants an opportunity to build a relationship with a more experienced artist, and develop a project concept within the field of interdisciplinary arts with their guidance. The program is designed to be flexible and casual, and is based on the model of hub mentoring.

Steve Eland, director of 24HR Art, has been invited by Qantas to nominate three NT artists for annual Qantas Foundation Encouragement of Australian Contemporary Art Award. NT artist Nerida Stockley has won the prize of this year.
